"No attack on Syria, no matter what, say voters

British voters oppose any military attack on Syria, even if it is proved beyond doubt President Bashar al-Assad’s government used chemical weapons on his own people, a opinion poll reveals.

The ICM survey for The Sunday Telegraph shows the biggest proportion of voters would not want MPs to stage a second Commons vote on intervention if United Nations weapons inspectors confirm that the August 24 attack on civilians involved chemicals.


The poll also reveals that fewer than one in five voters believes Britain should join the United States in strikes on Syria, with almost half supporting restricting action to providing humanitarian aid to refugees.

The results suggest David Cameron’s acceptance of last month’s Commons vote against his own call for military action was in line with the public mood and that the Prime Minister would be taking a big risk if he tried a second time to win the support of MPs." Continues

"A FORMER headteacher has been arrested in connection with alleged ­historic child sex abuse – following a Sunday People investigation.

Detectives swooped at the home of Richard Alston, 69, in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

He was held after we put a witness in touch with Met Police working on Operation Fairbank.

The man – now in his 40s – claims to have ­information about a high-level paedophile ring.


Alston was arrested on August 20 under Operation Cayacos – a new strand of Fairbank.

He was questioned before being released on police bail and is due to appear again in November.

Alston is former head of New Barns School, Toddington, Glos, which closed in 1992.

The independent boarding school took children aged six to 12 with emotional and behavioural problems.

When told the People knew he had been arrested over historic sex allegations, he replied: “That’s true, but I have no wish to say anything further.”

A statement from the Met Police said: “We can confirm that officers from Operation Fairbank have arrested a 69-year-old man in connection with historical allegations of sexual assault.

“The man was arrested at an address in Suffolk on August 20, taken into custody locally and later bailed to return, pending further enquiries. ”

Fairbank was launched after Labour MP Tom Watson raised concerns in the Commons about high-level paedophiles in the UK establishment." Continues
