#Iraqi #Kurdish President's trip #Russia #GEOPOLITICS

It made news as a historic visit to Russia. But Iraqi Kurdish President Massoud Barzan's first trip to Russia has sparked controversy. Speaking in Moscow, President Barzani has reportedly admired the Kalashnikov rifle and announced that Kurdistan is ready to buy weapons that Russia may offer. The ministry for the Kurdish Peshmarga military acknowledges that Kurdistan must get Baghdad's permission to buy Russian weapons.

Published on Feb 25, 2013 However, talk of purchasing the weapons has raised eyebrows in Baghdad. Baghdad previously agreed to its own $4.2bn arms deal with Russia. President Barzani says he does not oppose the deal but any country selling arms to Iraq should make sure the weapons are not used in civil wars. The deal was re-examined after claims that it was corrupt. In Moscow President Barzani also announced an oil deal with Russian outfit Gazprom. Dale McEwan, Press TV, Arbil
