#FRENCH GOVT APPROVED #FREE LIBRE #OPENSOURCE SOFTWARE #HOWTO

5th column from the left; in bold = software name
French govt already on Linux; I use debian.org distribution.  For FLOSS purists, like me. :) Best security IMHO; runs much of the rest of the underbelly of many other linux distributions (they're built on top of debian, many, but not all).

The main way to select between distributions might be the way software is packaged and distributed, in the way executables (programs) end with .exe on Windows machines; in the linux world the main two would be .deb (for debian and debain related distributions), and .rpm (for REDHAT based systems)

There are two main PACKAGE MANAGEMENT methodologies, .deb and .rpm and NOT compatible, your system either runs one, or the other; I like apt-get ... the package manager on debian systems! :)
