Surprise as Bank of England hawks calling for a hike back down fearing deflation could become entrenched

  • Monetary Policy Committee member’s Martin Weale and Ian McCafferty had called for an end to record-low interest rates since August
  • But this month they said that a rate rise now might cause below-target inflation to become entrenched
  • But risks remains ... with average earnings rising at 1.7 per cent in November, faster than inflation for a third successive month
