Iran's ninth parliament was sworn in on the 27th of May 2012; the responsibility of executing the people's will for the next 4 years was placed firmly on the shoulders of 288MPs, the majority of which are new faces.
So what is the inner make-up of the Iranian parliament? Who will be the speaker and what fractions and committees are set to be formed, and what is their role in the lawmaking process?
Iran has three branches of power, the legislative and executive bodies and the Judiciary. When it comes to the laws of the land it's the legislative body or parliament that has the clout.
The other two branches of power are responsible for executing the law. Based on Iran's constitution the parliament's responsibilities go beyond lawmaking.
The parliament has to supervise the execution of laws. Government ministers need the parliament's vote of confidence before they can take office, and the legislative body can impeach ministers and even the president.
