Bottom line, this issue is kept alive by the huge numbers of people getting sick from aspartame.
I would recommend Dr. H.J. Robert's book, "Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic". He is a real doctor (Endocrinologist) and I have met him face-to-face. I have also met Dr. Blaylock and Dr. Ralph Walton. Walton, if you remember, is the psychiatrist who conducted his own experiment on aspartame that went horribly wrong. These doctors, by the way, discuss the phenylalanine as it's derived from aspartame. Phenylalanine quantities, dosage and the way it's ingested from aspartame are far different compared to the phenylalanine ingested from natural sources of protein - and yes, various studies do reference dosages and toxic responses. Phenylalanine derived from aspartame breaks down into diketopiperazine, a tumor causing agent.
Trying to compare the methanol found in fruits to the methanol ingested as a breakdown component of aspartame has long been dismissed. One reason is that methanol combines with the pectin in fruit and passes through the body in a harmless manner.
Dr. Woodrow C. Monte's work adds a significant contribution to defining the real issues of methanol in aspartame:

Finally, an important effect of aspartame is comparable to that of MSG. It's called excitotoxicity. One defining moment in finding a doctor to trust is to simply ask if they are familiar with the term "Excitotoxins". If they aren't, time to move on:

Aspartic acid, when it is derived from aspartame, is an exitotoxin and behaves just like MSG.
Concerning the dubious path for approval through the FDA, there is a definitive report from Dr. Jerome Bressler who spells out how an outfit like G.D. Searle was indicted for fraud. No convoluted statements over the types of rats or corn - just a clear assessment of the research. It's essentially the smoking gun and no industry lawyer will touch it:

Unfortunately, I have met a lot of people who where sickened by aspartame and I'm one of them. I don't know what motivates people to push aspartame, especially when Dr. Adrian Gross, a key researcher within the FDA scrutinizing the aspartame studies says:
"At the heart of the FDA's regulatory process is its
ability to rely upon the integrity of the basic safety
data submitted by sponsors of regulated products. Our
investigation clearly demonstrates that, in the [case of
the] GD Searle Company, we have no basis for such
reliance now. "
The studies used for the approval of aspartame are precisely the studies referred to by Dr. Gross and Dr. Bressler's Report. No additional lab studies pivotal to the approval of aspartame took place to address the issues in the Bressler report. This is a case where politics did triumph over science. Attorney Jim Turner is a witness to the the precise mechanisms behind the approval of aspartame without sufficient studies addressing the concerns raised initially by the FDA scientists:
